Guilty Pleasures

Sunday, January 22, 2012 9 Comments »
There are certain "reality" shows I'm addicted to.  Don't get me wrong, I like Downton Abbey, American Masters, and all of those shows that improve my mind.  They allow me to pretend that TV really isn't a vast wasteland, and converse intellectually with my friends.   There is a special appeal, however, to shows like Swamp Loggers and Hillbilly Handfishing.

I find many of these shows perfect to watch while I sew.  Some shows, however,  make me really uncomfortable, and are such a train wreck that I can't watch them.  Those would be Toddlers and Tiaras, Dance Moms, Bridezilla, and any of the Housewives.  Sorry, but the women on those shows should be put in padded rooms somewhere and made to watch reruns of those shows over and over.

The shows I really like involve some sort of contest:  Top Chef (and Top Chef Masters), Chopped, HGTV Design Stars, All American Handyman, and Project Runway.  LOVE Project Runway, especially the current spin-off Project Runway All Stars (I want to take Mondo home).   On a lesser tier are the ones that try to determine America's Best anything:  Hairdresser, Dog Groomer, or Accessorizer.  Then there are the ones with happy endings, like House Hunters, Say Yes to the Dress, and Holmes on Holmes.  I like those too.  And the all-time train wreck that I could not stop watching, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

Come on, fess up.  What are YOUR guilty TV pleasures.

Looks like we have the same taste in reality shows. Even my husband got into watching My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding...it was so horrible you couldn`t turn the channel..lol

It has never occurred to me to turn the television on when I'm sewing! (But then it never occurs to me to turn it on at any other time, either.) I like the radio on for background, and prefer classical.

Like Nancy, I do music while I sew. But when the tv is on I usually don't have control of the remote. We end up watching the man-reality shows with all the bleeps: Ax Men, Swamp People, Deadliest Catch, Black Gold, Gold Rush, American Chopper. Gross sometimes, foul language all the time.

The only reality shows that I actually look for are the Hoarding shows! I love watching them.....then I don't feel quite so bad about the little messes in my house! lol

I love that show about 'Hoarders' and a UK show where 2 women go into absolutely filthy houses and clean them up! I love selling Houses Australia where houses that nobody wants to buy are spruced up to sell. But my really guilty TV addiction is detective shows...mainly UK ones. I still get a lot of knitting and sewing done :-)

OMG - Hoarders! Sometimes you just need to watch something so bizarre to tremind yourself how normal you really are! I don't have cable/satellite on the TV in my sewing room, so in there I end up with the really depraved shows like "The Bachelor". So sick...
(is it too late to make my comment anonymous?)

Love all those train wrecks. But Hillbilly Handfishing churns my stomach when they have to reach waaaaaaay in some hidden mud-cave. Euuuuwww. And I cannot turn away until I know they don't need an hand transplant.

Okay, here it goes.......Deadliest Catch, Selling New York and Selling LA, House Hunters, Property Virgins but I miss Sandra, and Gold Rush. Don't ask me why. I really don't know.
